The Women Olympiad Team to Baku was honored with recognition from the Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) for outstanding performance during a ceremony in MCF AGM 2016 today.

The 42nd Chess Olympiad held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 1 till 14 September, saw the girls emerging as winners of Group C in the Women's Category.

The team consisted of players Tan Li Ting, Alia Anin Azwa Bakri, Nur Nabila Azman Hisham, Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar dan Nur Najiha Azman Hisham, and team captain Gregory Lau. Tan Li Ting was not present for the ceremony because she is taking part in an event in Indonesia.

It is the best performance for a Malaysian team in the Olympiad ever. They beat much stronger teams such as China, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, India, USA and Hungary.

In the penultimate round, Malaysia beat Peru to put themselves at the 13th spot out of 140 countries.

Last round loss to Azerbaijan saw that dip to 25th spot. Still, that is the most impressive showing for Malaysia Women chess in the Olympiad in history!
