The 8th Penang Heritage International Chess Open ended with 16 year old IM Temur Kuybokarov taking clear first place out of the 98 participants taking part in the Open section. Temur scored an impressive 8/9 staying one full point ahead of his nearest rival.

However the leader spot during the initial half of the tournament were fiercely contested by two FMs namely FM Ervan Mohamad and FM Dang Hoang Son. Ervan took sole lead in Round 6 with a perfect 6/6 score after defeating Hoang in that round. However IM Temur took over after beating FM Ervan in Round 7 and the former proceeded to win convincingly all the games after that. This included a last round win against 2014 Penang Open Champion, GM Buenav Villamayor.

Despite having clashes with other international events in Philippines, Indonesia and India, the playing field of 98 players was strong and included a total of 7 GMs, 9 IMs and 6 FMs.

The tournament also saw 4 norms awarded.

IM norms:

  • FM Ervan Mohamad
  • FM Pitra Andika
  • FM Dang Hoang Son

WFM Sanja J of India got a WIM norm for her efforts.
