The 3rd Johor International Open was held between 12th to 17th December 2016 and won by 21 year old Iranian Grandmaster Idani Pouya. Despite having the event clash with competing tournaments in Philippines, Australia, Indonesia and India, the event managed to get the attention of many titled players overseas. There were 8 GM, 10 IM, 10 FM and various other titled players taking part from countries such as Iran, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and India.

GM Idani Pouya was the early leader of the tournament and never looked back, wrapping up the championship with one round to go. He takes home cash prize of RM 8000 for his efforts.

Idani's commanding score of 8/9 placed him a full point ahead of Penang Open winner International Master Kuybokarov Temur (RM 5000) who finished in second place.

Indian Grandmaster K.K. Laxman was third (RM 3000) in a field of 65 players.
